At Sutra Homes, every decision starts with the same question: is this good enough to sleep on, night after night, for years?
The answer has to be yes before anything reaches you. Here is exactly what that means in practice.
The Fibre: 100% Long-Staple Cotton
Not all cotton is equal. The difference lies in the length of the individual fibres - what the industry calls staple length.
Short-staple cotton produces a rougher, weaker yarn. It pills faster, feels coarser against skin, and degrades with washing. It is the cotton behind most mass-market bedding.
Long-staple cotton produces longer, smoother, stronger fibres. These spin into a finer yarn that feels silkier, holds its structure wash after wash, and softens further over time rather than deteriorating. It is the foundation of genuinely good bedding and the only cotton we use.
There are no synthetic blends in our sheets. No polyester, no nylon, no bamboo-derived viscose. Just pure, natural, long-staple cotton - from fibre to finished fabric.
The Weave: Single-Ply 300TC Sateen
Thread count is one of the most misunderstood numbers in bedding. Many brands inflate it by twisting multiple thin, lower-grade fibres together and counting each strand individually - producing a 800TC or 1200TC label on fabric that is heavier, less breathable, and lower quality than it appears.
We are starting with a single-ply 300TC sateen weave deliberately. Single-ply means each thread is one continuous fibre, not a twisted bundle. 300TC at single-ply is the sweet spot: lightweight, breathable, and genuinely soft without the density that traps heat.
The sateen weave structure - where more threads surface on top - gives the fabric its characteristic fluid drape and subtle sheen. It is what makes our sheets feel cool and smooth against your skin rather than stiff or heavy.
The Certification: OEKO-TEX® Standard 100
OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is one of the world’s most rigorous independent textile safety certifications. It tests every component of a finished product - not just the fabric, but the stitching threads and the elastic - against over 350 harmful substances.
That list includes formaldehyde, pesticide residues, heavy metals, phthalates, and the waxy sizing finishes that many brands apply to make low-grade fabric feel smooth in-store (and scratchy after the first wash).
Our sheets pass every test. The certification is independently verified, not self-declared. It means what you are sleeping on is genuinely free from chemical residues from the very first night, with no break-in period required.

The Construction: Details That Hold Up
Good fabric deserves good construction. Our fitted sheets are cut with a 40cm pocket depth to accommodate the full range of standard Australian mattresses, finished with 3/4 inch elastic running the full perimeter - not just the corners - so the sheet stays anchored through the night.
Pillowcases use a clean sleeve closure: no buttons, no gaps. Every set comes with a matching storage pouch made from the same fabric and colourway, designed for your linen cupboard rather than a shelf.
What We Do Not Do
We think it is worth being explicit about what is not in our sheets, because the bedding industry has a long history of obscuring this:
- No synthetic fibres or blended fabrics
- No chemical softening finishes that wash out after a few cycles
- No inflated thread counts achieved through multi-ply twisting
- No misleading certifications applied only to part of the product
What you feel on the first night is the quality of the cotton and the weave. Nothing else.
